Marian Hanes | Senior Bulletin Board: Helpful reminders as winter approaches

I'm hoping everyone had a pleasant Thanksgiving, and now it's on to Holiday Merriment including Tree-Lighting, Tractor Parades, and musical performances. Joy, joy!          It's good to be able to report that one of the senior citizens in this area, who had reason to travel to New York City recently, took advantage of the new bus service to the Amtrak station in Rensselaer and was favorably impressed with it. As you probably know, there are several trips a day from Manchester to Amtrak, the Greyhound station, and Albany International Airport.

Additionally, as winter approaches, it's important to remember the necessary tasks that come with it.

First, be sure to make your decision about health insurance or Medicare options for 2018 and complete an application for whatever your choice is. Sign up for information sessions now.

Also, take charge of getting snow tires onto your vehicle. Winter is coming, bringing with it snow, ice, and slippery roadways. Always make sure that you are carrying your fully-charged cell phone, especially if bad weather is in the forecast.

Furthermore, if you haven't already gotten your flu shot for the upcoming winter, you should be talking with your primary care physician about whether it is appropriate and advisable for you to get one. Keep in mind that seniors to contract that flu are considered to be especially vulnerable to serious, long-range effects.

Finally, don't forget that the Manchester Senior Meals site is now at the Manchester Community Library, serving a hot lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week. Please note that these lunches are not "freebies" to all seniors, and those who do take advantage of the program are asked to consider a donation of $3.50 per meal. Call 802-442-8012 for a reservation.
