Hoosick Township Historical Society
The Hoosick Township Historical Society will host an afternoon celebrating the history of early American life and the people who lived it. Natty Bumppo Day commemorates Nathaniel Shipman, a 19th century Town of Hoosick resident who was the basis for Natty Bumppo, the hero of James Fenimore Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales."
Activities will include discussions of Shipman's life and legacy and how he became a part of Cooper's most famous works, including "The Last of the Mohicans" and "The Deerslayer." There will also be demonstrations of how early American woodsmen lived off the land and a tour of the First Baptist Church and the nearby burial ground where Shipman is buried. A Legends & Lore sign commemorating Shipman's life and connection to history will be unveiled along with a new headstone to mark his grave.
Reconnect with early American history and our ancestors for an afternoon that is educational and fun for the whole family.
The Hoosick Township Historical Society is a not-for-profit organization with a mission of preserving and generating interest in local history within the Town of Hoosick and the Village of Hoosick Falls, New York.
