Married cellists highlight Manchester Music Festival program


MANCHESTER — Manchester Music Festival's concert at 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 20 at SVAC's Arkell Pavilion will feature a pair of cellists with a close connection. David Requiro and Meta Weiss are also husband and wife, and they are are slated to close out the festival concert evening on the 20th with Giovanni Sollima's Arboreto Salvatico for Two Celli.The piece is the finale of a program also featuring works by Liebermann, Arensky and Dvorak. Performing under the direction of festival artistic director Adam Neiman with Requiro and Weiss will be MingHuan Xu (violin), Ara Gregorian (viola), and Michael Brown (piano).The Arboreto Salvatico for Two Celli is described by Requiro and Meta Weiss as "minimalist, hypnotic, and atmospheric with engaging and accessible melodies." It is inspired by the collection of poetry by Mario Rigoni Stern, which explores different species of trees, and Requiro and Weiss will perform the movements Il Tasso, Il Pino, and La Sequoia.Requiro and Weiss both grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and officially met at a cello master class in their teens. Later, they both ended up on the East Coast studying cello during their high school years and participating in courses at the New England Conservatory. Now, Requiro is an assistant professor at the University of Colorado, while Weiss is a senior lecturer at Queensland Conservatorium in Australia.Requiro is also this week's featured artist at MMF's free Pre-Concert Recital and will perform solo cello pieces by J.S. Bach and by Cassad . The public is welcome to attend a short performance and up-close Q&A from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., at SVAC's Arkell Pavilion. The public can also attend a master class with Requiro on Saturday, July 22.Tickets for the Thursday, July 20 concert are $35 for adults. MMF jhas also scheduiled a Young Artists Program concert at Arkell Pavilion for 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 23 at Arkell Pavilion.
