Letters: James has vision for Vermont
I support Kathleen James for Vermont State Representative and I encourage others to vote for her. My foremost reason for supporting Kathleen is that I agree with her vision for Vermont. But, beyond that, I believe Kathleen possesses great intellectual integrity and an unusual and exceptional ability to listen to others.
I first noted this a few years ago, before I really knew Kathleen, when she gave a presentation at a public meeting. I raised my hand and asked questions that clearly showed I disagreed with her. I expected that would be the end of our interaction. But, a few minutes after I returned home, the phone rang. It was Kathleen. She didn't call to argue with me. She wanted to understand my position on the issue and she wanted me to understand her position. We had a long, frank, and pleasant conversation.
Part of what impressed me about that conversation was that it happened at all — how often do people who disagree on political issues really take the time to calmly discuss their differences of opinion? But what impressed me the most was that Kathleen had reached out to me. I had no reason to expect that I would hear from her. But she called me, not in spite of my disagreement with her, but because I had challenged her position and that made her want a longer discussion.
So, I urge you, if you agree with Kathleen, as I do, on the current policy decisions facing Vermonters, vote for her. And, if you are tired of division and political rancor and want someone who will listen and engage with those with different points of view, that is another reason to vote for her.
