Letter: 'Resolution for Renewable Energy' added to ballot

To the Editor, Many members of the local environmental justice group Earth Matters gathered over 500 signatures in December and January to get a resolution on the Town Meeting warning in six area towns. The resolution campaign, developed by 350VT, includes a request for towns to urge the State of Vermont to halt any new or expanded fossil fuel infrastructure, such as oil and gas pipelines, and to firmly commit to at least 90 percent renewable energy with firm interim deadlines. The resolution also asks that towns enlist state support to weatherize town structures and install alternative energy, such as rooftop solar. Manchester, Dorset, Rupert, Weston, Peru and Shaftsbury were all successful in getting the resolution on the ballot for Town Meeting Day on March 6.Congratulations to those who spearheaded the campaign in their home town, including Carl, Jen, Kathleen, Letitia, Trinity, Loretta, Jillian and Lin. Many thanks to all those who helped gather signatures and signed the petitions. Earth Matters is grateful to Nature's Market, New Morning Natural Foods, Northshire Bookstore, the Manchester Community Library, and the Dorset Union Store, for displaying the petitions and allowing us to gather signatures on their premises. Members of Earth Matters will appear on GNAT-TV in February to talk about the Town Meeting Resolution and other environmental issues. We hope to see you at town meeting, and we hope you vote in support of this important resolution. Anne D'OlivoManchester
