Letter: It's time for Manchester to ban plastic bags
To the editor:I'd like to thank all the folks who stayed late into Manchester's town meeting on March 2nd to voice overwhelming support for a ban on single-use plastic bags. The vote, with only a smattering of nays heard, clearly demonstrates that Manchester voters not only care about a litter-free town, but also endorse sound macro-environmental policy. It is now up to the Manchester Select Board to step to the plate and craft an ordinance to implement the will of Town Meeting. Developing such a regulation shouldn't require a Herculean effort, since Brattleboro and Wilmington have already adopted ordinances that can serve as helpful guideposts. The question of whether to ban single-use bags is slated for discussion at the Board's March 26th meeting. I would encourage Manchester residents to contact members of the Select Board to urge them to move ahead aggressively to implement this worthy initiative without delay. Let's be the third municipality in southern Vermont to make a plastic bag ban the law of the land.Jeff WilsonManchester
