Letter: Businesses honored for not selling to minors

To the editor:

Congratulations on behalf of the Bennington County Regional Prevention Partnership to the following stores for successfully passing a Vermont Division of Liquor Control Compliance Check: Dollar General Store, Stewart's Shop, Heer Inc. in Arlington; Hasgas General Store in South Dorset, Jiffy Mart in East Dorset; and J.J. Hapgood General Store in Peru.

These stores will receive certificates for their employees' diligence in checking identification and not selling to underage persons. Reducing the sale of alcoholic beverages to youth is proven to be very effective in reducing youth consumption rates and makes alcohol more difficult to obtain. It also helps prevent future dependence on alcohol as adults with 90 percent of adults struggling with addiction today started using before 21 years of age, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse.

The next Department of Liquor Control in-person seminar for anyone selling alcohol or tobacco is on March 22 at the Dorset Town Office.

If your store would like to participate, please contact VT's Division of Liquor Control at 802-828-2345 or The Collaborative at 802-824-4200. Dates for in-person training for bar, restaurant, hotel and club employees can be found at the Division of Liquor Control's website www.liquorcontrol.vermont.gov.

The Collaborative promotes the development of a healthy involved community supporting substance free youth in a caring environment.
