Letter: An attempt to rewrite history

Posted

To the editor:Our former first lady reminded 50 newly made citizens at a naturalization ceremony at the National Archives in Washington D.C., that the Founding Fathers were not born in America. In her speech, referring to the Declaration of Independence, she stated: "It's amazing that just a few feet from here where I'm standing are the signatures of the 56 founders who put their names on a declaration that changed the course of history, and like the 50 of you, none of them were born American — they became American." The true facts are that in Philadelphia, (the then capital of the United States), only eight of the 56 signers were not born in America. Benjamin Franklin was born in Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and James Madison were born in Virginia, and John Adams was born in Massachusetts in addition to 43 other American born signers.Surely our former first lady should have known this being a Harvard law graduate, or maybe not.Perry Green, Chairman Manchester GOP
