How to write a news release (and get it published in The Berkshire Eagle)
Many people say that unless it’s in The Eagle, it never happened in the Berkshires. We at The Eagle understand that full well and it is our intention to provide all of the news we can to our community, which includes your community. Therefore, The Eagle welcomes and encourages written releases on local news items of community interest.
The Eagle publishes these items in several forms — as standalone news items, as calendar items or other listings, or in some cases as the basis of staff-written news stories — and we publish these items on several platforms: in the paper, on our website at berkshireeagle.com, on our news apps, etc.
News releases are no substitute for announcements that should be advertised, i.e., a clothing store is having a sale on clothes. For whatever reason, a few news releases regrettably may never see publication, but the overwhelming majority do.
If you are seeking coverage of a newsworthy event, request it in the news release.
Be advised …
Subject line: Should contain a two-word event description, a location, a date.
Timing: Submit items two weeks in advance.
Content: What/who, when, where, how, how much. Include what's happening, when and where is it happening (date and time), what's the cost of the event or deadline to respond, and contacts, such as a phone number, email or website.
Length: Up to 200 words.
Calendar components: Some organizations include a “calendar” component of 25 or fewer words in addition to the news item. Our calendars cater to events and activities that are of widespread interest, that are low-cost or free, and that involve community organizations, nonprofits or benevolent efforts.
How can we reach you? Include a name, email and phone number.
Photographs: We welcome high resolution photographs as long as they are (200-plus dpi) jpgs. Attach them to your email.
