DORSET — The Dorset Players will bring Ernest Thompson's warm and witty comedy-drama, "On Golden Pond," to the Dorset stage for two weekends beginning Friday, March 6.

The play tells the story of Norman Thayer, a cantankerous retired professor, and his wife, Ethel, who spend each summer on a lake in Maine called Golden Pond.

"On Golden Pond" has been an award-winning vehicle for leading actors since Frances Sternhagen's Tony Award winning performance in the original Broadway production. Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda later won Oscars for their film performances as the aging couple; and James Earl Jones earned another Tony in the play's most recent Broadway revival.

The plot is set in motion when daughter Chelsea, who shared a strained relationship with her father growing up, comes to visit with her fiance and his young son.

Richard Maiori and Donna Murray are cast as the professor and his wife. Elisabeth Hazelton, who was last seen in the Players production of Sylvia, will play Chelsea.

Also in the show directed by Richard Grip are Jon Mathewson as Charlie, Paul Thompson as Bill, and Julian Pirie as young Billy.

"On Golden Pond explores family tensions and dynamics with which I think most of us can identify," the play's director, Richard Grip, said in a release. "The characters are real people that I find especially warm and appealing."

Tickets may be purchased online at or by calling the box office at 802-867-5777. The box office will be open during the weeks of March 2 and 9 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., as well as two hours prior to each performance.
