MANCHESTER — Burr and Burton girls soccer defeated Rutland by a final score of 4-1 at Apple Jack Stadium on Oct. 7.
Charlotte Connolly continued her hot start to the 2020 season, securing a hat trick with more than five minutes to go in the first half. Connolly is ultra aggressive on the pitch, and rarely wastes an opportunity to get the ball into the back of the net.
BBA's fourth goal came off the foot of Rowan Russell.
Connolly was able to create one-on-one opportunities with herself versus the Rutland goalie on a handful of possessions. All three of her scores came inside the box.
On Connolly's second goal, the sophomore attacked Rutland's keeper, forcing her to commit to one side. Rutland's goalie shifted to the right, and Connolly put the ball into the left side of the net with ease.
Despite the four goals allowed, Rutland's goalie had a strong game. BBA looked poised to add another three or four scores, but Rutland's keeper limited BBA's scoring the best she could with her strong play.
Rutland's lone goal came less than a minute after Connolly completed her hat trick. Rutland's No. 7 fired a missile well outside the box and just over the outstretched hand of BBA keeper Carol Herbert. Herbert registered nine saves on the night, much of them coming in the second half.
BBA's defense, led by Emma Thomas, was able to stifle Rutland on many possessions before they were able to get shot opportunities. Thomas has been reliable for the Bulldogs in 2020. It seems like she is always in the right place at the right time, stopping the momentum of the opposing team time and time again.
BBA was scheduled to play Mount Anthony on Wednesday.
