ARLINGTON — Arlington celebrated its six senior members of their varsity soccer program on Oct. 14 prior to their matchup with Mill River.
Mill River spoiled Arlington's celebration once the game got underway.
The Minutemen wasted no time, scoring in the first minute in what would be a 3-1 victory over the Eagles. After the quick score, Mill River continued to bring the energy that Arlington lacked throughout portions of the contest.
"Our effort just wasn't there tonight, and we don't know why," coach Todd Wilkins said. "It's senior night, you would think this is the night that your effort is there."
By halftime, Arlington trailed 2-0. They came out for the second half with more energy, fighting back with a score early in the second half. Lewis Whalen showed great ball control and was able to get past the Mill River keeper who moved forward in the box. Once Whalen was past him, he softly put the ball into the open net.
Wilkins emphasized stretching the field and attacking from the left and right side, rather than down the middle where the Minutemen defense seemed to be at its strongest. When the Eagles were able to do so, they were rewarded with decent looks at the net. Mill River's keeper made some nice saves throughout the night, and a few other shots ended up just wide of the net.
Wilkins called the 2021 Arlington senior group "extremely talented."
"If those seniors can truly step up and be leaders the rest of the season, we still got high hopes," Wilkins said. "Hopefully a run to a state championship."
The Eagles coach believes that Wednesday's tough outing will serve as motivation the rest of the way for the entire club, but in particular the six seniors.
"This will be a learning experience for them," Wilkins said. "This is not how they wanted their senior night to go, but we can't control that. The best that we can do is learn from this loss and make sure we don't feel like this again for the rest of the year."
Arlington was scheduled to conclude their regular season with a road matchup with Mount Saint Joseph Academy on Thursday.
