Green Mountain Club
On Saturday, Jan. 11, meet at 8 a.m. at the southwest corner of the Stratton Mountain Base Lodge. You will need to park in the lot #1 parking and allow 15 minutes either via the shuttle bus or via walking to get to the base lodge. Thank you to the Stratton Mtn Ski Area, we will ride up on the gondola for free to the summit. After donning snowshoes, hike to summit trail to the Fire Tower and then the Long Trail north to Stratton Pond. Lunch at the shelter or the pond depending on how cold it is. Return via the Long Trail south to VAST 7 (the IP road), follow VAST 7 and the a piece of the Catamount Trail and a side trail to Catamount to the ski area and descend to the base area on Stratton ski trails. Total distance about 7.5 miles with about 1800 feet of descent and about 500 feet of ascent. Moderately difficult. NO DOGS as they are neither allowed on the gondola nor the ski trail. Bring extra layers, a wool or fleece hat, extra mittens, hand warmers, snacks, lunch and fluids. We will travel as slow as our slowest hiker with stops to wait for the slowest folks to catch up, so be prepared to stop and wait. Poles are helpful especially for the downhill. Should the gondola not be running because of wind the leader will have an alternate snowshoe hike in the area and the meeting place and time will be the same.
