With pride

To the Editor:

It was with great pride I read Karolinka Sowulewska's article in the Manchester Journal about her experiences at the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies (Nature knows no borders). As many of you know I was a member of the founding faculty of the Institute in 1996 when I was given a generous eleven month sabbatical from the Israel Congregation. The program became the address for so many of my passions: peace; the environment; kibbutz living; multi cultural education; the desert (I also love the mountains of Vermont); the best of Zionism.

As Karolinka mentioned she is the third BBA student in recent years to attend the Institute. As the news of the day reminds us we need to know more about the Middle East than most of us do; the Arava Institute provides a way to do that. At this season of giving thanks and bringing light where there is darkness the Arava Institute is an organization we can all be thankful for. As Karolinka mentioned there are many of you in the area who have supported the life changing and important work of the Institute over the years. For that I can tell you the Institute and its many participants are gratefully thankful.

Rabbi Michael M. Cohen, Rabbi Emeritus

Israel Congregation
