VFW announces essay contest winners


MANCHESTER >> Harned-Fowler VFW Post 6471 of Manchester has announced the 2015 VFW Voice of Democracy Essay contest winners. This year's theme was "My Vision for America."

The post received two entries from one area school, Burr and Burton Academy. Both students are to be commended on their outstanding essays. VFW Post 6471 first place winner this year is Claire Reid and she won $300, certificates and a VOD backpack. The second place winner was Ramsay Eyre who won $200 and a certificate.

Claire Reid's winning essay from Manchester VFW Post 6471 has been advanced to District 1 VFW of Vermont level competition and the winner there will be determined by Dec. 10, 2015. That winner then advances to Vermont State VFW level to compete for $1,000 in prizes.

The State VFW winner will be chosen at the Springfield, Vt., at the State VFW awards banquet on Jan. 9, 2016 and goes on to the national competition to compete against 53 of their peers from all the U.S. States and territories. Annually, about 40,000 students from grades 9-12 (nationwide) enter. One first-place winner from each state competes to win 53 national runner-up awards ranging from $1000 to $16,000. The national first-place winner will win $30,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March.

Congratulations to these Burr and Burton students who entered and wrote two outstanding essay's on the theme for this year.
