Vermont FairPoint workers to hold July 11 strike vote

Two unions representing about 450 Vermont employees of FairPoint Communications will hold a strike vote July 11.

IBEW Local 2326 represents about 350 workers and Communications Workers of America (CWA) represents about 100 customer service representatives in Vermont. The unions represent about 1,800 employees in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Employees and management are at odds over a new contract that would replace the one that expires Aug. 2. The company has proposed freezing pension benefits and reducing other benefits, union officials say. Bargaining has not produced a compromise. The company will not extend the Aug. 2 deadline for negotiations, union spokesman Mike Spillane said.

The Vermont strike vote will take place from 6-8 p.m. July 11 at IBEW Local 2326 headquarters in Colchester. Similar votes will take place in Maine and New Hampshire July 12-13.
