SVMC names new OB/GYN

BENNINGTON - Wendy Conway, M.D., has joined Southwestern Vermont Medical Center's Obstetrics and Gynecology department and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Putnam Physicians group. She currently serves as a Major in the United States Air Force and staff OB/Gyn physician at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Landstuhl's obstetrics and gynecology department is the largest military overseas OB/GYN department in the world.

"It has been an honor to serve the United States," says Dr. Conway. "Serving in the US military helped me to achieve my dream of becoming an obstetrician and gynecologist. I have spent the last six years treating women in Europe and Asia. Now it is time to return to the States and the beautiful state of Vermont."

Beginning when she was a medical student, Dr. Conway has had a passion for serving women in underserved areas of the world. She served as a head physician for Gynecological Humanitarian trips to Ecuador for the University of Vermont (UVM). Her work was recognized when her class selected her as one of only seven recipients (out of 234 residents) to receive the prestigious Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award.

"I have always believed that we need to serve others, as citizens of the world," says Dr. Conway. "I am privileged to live and work in the United States, where despite the current debate over the state of our healthcare system, women have far better healthcare than women in third world countries. That is why I believe it is my responsibility to reach out to them and deliver care to them whenever I can." Dr. Conway began her military career in 2004 when she was commissioned as an OB/GYN resident at the University of Vermont (UVM) through the Financial Assistance Program. She then served as Chief Resident of the program. After completing her OB/Gyn residency at University of Vermont/Fletcher Allen Health Care, in Burlington, she attended Commission Officer Training. There she was a Distinguished Graduate and received the top female athletic award.

Throughout her military career, Dr. Conway has maintained a perfect 100 percent score on her physical fitness tests. She is an avid runner triathlete and has run 14 marathons. Last year Dr. Conway ran the Frankfurt Marathon in a time (three hours, 39 minutes and 39 seconds) that qualified her to participate in the Boston Marathon.

"I have always loved sports, and especially running," said Dr. Conway. "I bring that athletic spirit to my practice. Exercise is very important to a woman's health. It can reduce stress and the risk of breast cancer, and keep important factors like blood pressure and cholesterol levels under control. I talk to my patients and encourage them to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. I know what it can do for a woman's health, from first-hand experience." Dr. Conway is a member of the Risk Management Committee and runs the Peer Review program for the OB/Gyn Department at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. She is a certified lactation consultant. Previously she served as Chief of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department at Yokota Air Base, Japan.

She is an Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor. Dr. Conway attended Medical School at East Tennessee State University where she was the recipient of an American Heart Research Fellowship. She is a board certified OB/Gyn and a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FACOG).

Dr. Conway has been married to James Conway since October 2006. James is an attorney that holds his bar certification in Massachusetts and Vermont. They have three children, Julia, James and Calvin.

Dr. Conway's office will be in the Medical Office Building at 140 Hospital Drive in Bennington, Suite 302. To make an appointment with her, call (802) 442-9600.
