Stewart snags MVP honor
Stewart finished with 16 saves, splitting time in net with Lukas Caldwell. His BBA teammates, Sean Paradis and Brock Pollard, each scored for the Austin squad in the victory.
In the girls game, the Harris Conference bested the Austin Conference, 4-3, behind a hat trick from Missisquoi's Katie Campbell.
Shehadi, Bibens lead South squad to win
WINDSOR -- Aaryngston Bibens notched 12 points and David Shehadi fired in 11 points, including three 3-pointers, to help lead the South squad to a 87-84 victory against the North in the Division I-II boys basketball all-star game on Saturday at Windsor High School.
It was the lone victory by the South in the day's four senior all-star contests hosted by the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association.
Bibens, from Mount Anthony Union, and Shehadi, from Burr and Burton Academy, were two of four southern players in double figures, along with Mill River's Jay Carleton and Otter Valley's Ryan Kelley. Lamoille's Derek Vanat had 11 points to lead the North.
In the Division I-II girls contest, the North held on a for a 72-59 victory. The North got 11 points apiece from Cassidy Derda and Sarah Paskevich.
Annie Jones (16 points) and Stephanie Grobe (15 points) paced the South, which got four points from MAU's Lacy Parmenter and two from BBA's Devin Brown.
Arlington's Alex Hawley scored six points for the South in the Division III-IV boys game, which the North won, 93-80, behind 16 points from Damian Smith.
Rayleen Sherman, also representing Arlington, tallied five points for the South in the small-school girls game, an 89-57 rout by the North. Alyssa Whitney netted 14 points to lead the victors.
Missisquoi's Matt St. Amour and Hartford's Stephanie Grobe were named the VBCA players of the year. BBA sophomore Joey Shehadi was named to the "Dream Dozen" all-star team of underclassmen.
BENNINGTON -- The third annual 'Shires of Vermont Marathon,' a classic point-to-point 26.2 mile road race connecting the southern Vermont towns of Bennington and Manchester, is accepting registrations for the race on May 19. Race applications and online registration are available at www.shiresofvermontmarathon.com. The race is organized by the Batten Kill Valley Runners to benefit community mental health and developmental services.
Runners from about 30 different states and foreign countries love the course, which will be the same this year as before. It starts at The Bennington Center for the Arts and finishes at Hildene Meadows in Manchester.
Anyone interested in helping to put on a very popular, large event is welcome to join the organizing committee, which meets monthly.
