Special Memorial Day at Mettawee

WEST PAWLET - On Friday, May 23, Bert LaCoste arranged for a special Memorial Day Celebration at Mettawee Community School, in West Pawlet, in support of her husband Ron, who is currently deployed to Camp Buehring, Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Bert and Ron are MCS parents of second grader Haley.

MCS' Memorial Day Ceremony was a tribute to Ron LaCoste and HHC 42nd Combat Aviation Bri gade Task Force Eagle for their devotion in fighting for the country. In time for the school's ceremony, Ron had sent an American flag that had been flown over the Northern Arabian Sea on April 14 on Kickback 44, A UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter on mission # MTN 1. A framed certificate acknowledging this flag's history now hangs in the school's lobby.

Ron LaCoste was able to listen to some of the school's ceremony through Facetime on Bert's phone. The whole school began by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and then followed with the singing of the National Anthem. Sixth grader Thom as Dunbar played Taps on his trumpet. The Granville American Le gion Color Guard was also represented. Each class read a poem or sang a song to acknowledge Memorial Day and the soldiers who have died for the United States of America. The morning's ceremony concluded the ceremony with singing the song America.

Bert LaCoste has been a key communicator with her husband Ron and Mettawee.

Students in the school made him a colorful banner that they each signed, as well all teachers in the school. Once the banner made it overseas, Ron took a few pictures with the banner and then sent them back to the school.

LaCoste's tour of duty is expected to be completed over the summer.
