SMS skiers score high in Quebec World Cup event

QUEBEC, Canada - Stratton Mountain School alumni and SMS T2 Team members brought the heat at the Quebec World Cup Cross Country Sprint on Dec. 8.

Sophie Caldwell, Peru, Vt. (SMS '08) finished 14th in the women's sprint, and Andy Newell, Shaftsbury, Vt. (SMS '02) finished 5th in the men's and was the first American finisher. US Ski Team member and SMS T2 Team member Jessie Diggins, Afton, Minn., and her fellow team members scored 1st in the women's team sprint on Dec. 7.

Newell broke into the top-5 in the men's individual sprint competition, defeating many of the world's best and setting the tone for the U.S. Ski Team. In the team sprint event on Dec. 7, Newell and his team finished 14th. Newell's finish comes on the heels of early-season competition in Finland and Sweden. Newell finished 4th in the FIS sprint in Muonio, Finland in November. Caldwell brought her A-game on Dec. 8 with her 14th-place World Cup sprint.

On Dec. 7, Caldwell and her fellow U.S. Team members finished 14th in the team sprint. Caldwell has come out strong all season, scoring at the US Super Tour in Bozeman, Mont., taking 7th in the spring finals on Dec.1, fourth in the 10km on Dec. 2 and fifth in the 10km in West Yellowstone, Mont. on Nov. 23. Diggins and fellow U.S. Ski Team member Kikkan Randall finished the women's team event in first, beating Germany by nearly a second. On Nov. 23, Diggins finished 3rd in the 4X5km World Cup relay in Gaellivare, Sweden.
