Singer scholarships at Battenkill Chorale


CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. >> The Battenkill Chorale is offering Young Singer Scholarships to deserving singers ages 14-26, who will become members of Washington County's premiere choral ensemble, the 100-voice Battenkill Chorale, with all membership costs covered by their Scholarship Award. This is a unique opportunity for young singers to sing outstanding choral works with one of the area's finest choirs, under the expert tutelage of Artistic Director Janet McGhee.

The spring concert offers a thrilling once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing The World Beloved: a Bluegrass Mass with internationally famous bluegrass band Monroe Crossing from Minnesota, who played the premiere of this exciting work, including its Carnegie Hall premiere, and have played the work over 50 times. Performances are May 7 and 8 at Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls, N.Y.

Janet McGhee is one of the Capital District's most respected and inspiring choral conductors. Her choirs have performed at Carnegie Hall and Symphony Hall in Boston, toured Russia and Europe, performed commissioned works, and collaborated with youth and adult choirs. McGhee has taught at New England Conservatory of Music (her alma mater), Bennington, Simmons, and Skidmore Colleges, Clark University, Berklee College of Music, and the Commonwealth School.

Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:45 p.m. either at Hubbard Hall, an historic 1878 rural opera house located at 25 East Main Street, or Cambridge United Presbyterian Church, both in Cambridge, N.Y.The first winter rehearsal is Jan. 21 at Cambridge United Presbyterian Church. Chorale also seeking new members

The Battenkill Chorale is also accepting experienced choral singers for their spring concert featuring 'The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass" by Carol Barnett with guest artists Monroe Crossing, the internationally famous bluegrass band from Minnesota who played the premiere of this work, including its Carnegie Hall premiere. These concerts will be Monroe Crossing's only Northeast appearance in 2016, and are scheduled between their Korean and European tours.
