Seeking a community member to serve
To the Editor:
Dear Residents of Sunderland,
A new Vermont law, Act 46, requires local school district boards to consolidate into new larger districts. In an effort to move forward, the Sunderland school board has voted to join with our neighbors in a formal merger study committee to explore their options under this law. At this time, the school boards from Dorset, Manchester, Mountain Towns RED, Danby, and Rupert have all agree to move forward on this merger committee. Consolidation is at the board level, not school buildings consolidation.
Sunderland will have two representatives on this merger study committee. One representative will be a school board member. The School Board has decided that Sunderland's other representative should come from the community at large. The selection and appointment of this other committee member is the purpose of sending you this letter.
The School Board is interested in gathering letters of interest from Sunderland community members who would like to serve on the merger study committee. We anticipate the study committee will be in place from April to December 2016 with monthly meetings. The School Board believes ideal candidates will:
• be open minded;
• be able to work effectively with the committee members from the other communities;
• be able to gather community input from all Sunderland stakeholders; and
• be willing to commit to putting in the necessary time to make this a successful process.
