Sales associate joins MJ team

MANCHESTER - A new sales consultant has joined The Journal's team, poised and ready to discuss the full range of advertising and marketing opportunities offered by the digital age.

Michele Van Ness is a native Vermonter who has called Arlington home for the past 13 years. Before coming to The Journal in mid-August, she worked for Air Now in Bennington in business development and marketing and also at Pyrofax in Manchester.

Van Ness said she was attracted to working in media sales due to the wide range of options available to customers and the ability to tailor an advertising message to a client's specific needs.

"What I liked about it is that we're a one-stop shop for print and all forms of digital advertising," she said. "I also like that I get to go out and meet new people and learn all about their businesses."

While traditional print advertising remains a mainstay of the newspaper advertising business, digitally-based advertising - whether on Web sites, or e-mail or social media platforms such as Facebook - are a growing trend. Local customers can opt to construct a sales message to reach not only a local audience, but also engage customers across a multi-state region, Van Ness said.

"I can help clients with search engine optimizing, help them build their Web sites, e-mail campaigns and Facebook campaigns," she said. "I like the fact that it was forward looking and that The Journal was moving into the digital age."

For example, Van Ness said, a local business might want to target a certain profile of customer, such as women between the ages of 30 and 45 years of age. The Journal, as part of a nationwide chain of media properties and through partnerships with other media organizations, can construct ads that run on Web sites and social media frequented by such potential customers who may live within driving range of the Manchester region, or from other parts of the nation entirely.

Rather than a "one-size-fits-all" broadbrush approach, ads can focus in where they can have the most potential impact, she said.

"I can come in and do print advertising, or digital, or both or a patchwork of all the options," Van Ness said.

The staff of The Journal is happy to take this opportunity to welcome Michele Van Ness to The Journal's sales team. She can be reached at 802-362-2222, ext. 104, or by e-mail at
