Rug history at the Dorset Historical Society

DORSET - The Dorset Historical Society's Third Thursday Lunchtime Lecture Series continues on Oct. 18 with a talk by Jim Gavagan on the history and identification of rugs, especially oriental rugs.

Gavagan has been in the rug business for 25 years. Before opening his Kara Finn Rugs shop in Dorset, he had a shop for many years in Bennington.

He specializes in antique, old, used and new handmade oriental rugs. In addition to buying and selling rugs he also repairs, cleans and valuates rugs. Gavagan's talk will focus on the history of rugs in America: who made them, and how they made them, and how the dyes were created. He encourages people to bring in rugs if they can carry them or bring photographs of larger carpets.

The talk is at noon, Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Dorset Historical Society. Bring a bag lunch, deserts and liquid refreshments will be available. For more information, call the Dorset Historical Society at 802-867-0331.
