Roundup: BBA boys tennis wins in opening match

BELLOWS FALLS -- The Burr and Burton Academy boys tennis team got wins from all five of their singles players in a 6-1 opening victory on the road against Bellows Falls on Monday.

Kevin Walla, Tim Geskas, Dave Shehadi, Noah Wetherald and Conor Harrington all won in straight sets for the Bulldogs.

In doubles, No. 1 team Coley Stillman and Justin Tegan extended the match to three sets but fell 6-3, 4-6, 10-4. No. 2 doubles Alen Gong and Oliver Le won in straight sets.

BBA blanks Otters

MANCHESTER -- The Burr and Burton Academy girls tennis team picked up right where it left off last season, topping Otter Valley 7-0 in a Division II matchup on Monday.

BBA (1-0) won each match in straight sets. Maddy Pagnucco, Jordan Harmon, Gabi Hasaj, Gabby Vella and Stella Oh all picked up victories. No. 1 doubles team Eliza Breed and Kitt Sikes won, as did the team of Julia Campanella and Haley McGrath.

BBA travels to Bellows Falls on Wednesday.

BBA tops Brattleboro

BRATTLEBORO -- Burr and Burton Academy's Robert England hit a go-ahead two-run single in the top of the fifth inning, leading the Bulldogs to a 5-3 opening win over Brattleboro on Monday.

Down 3-2, England's base hit gave BBA a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

On the mound, Taylor Fuller came in to relieve and earned the win with two scoreless innings, while Jake Stalcup got the save with two more scoreless frames.

Alex Alberti added an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh.

BBA faces rival Mount Anthony on Wednesday.

Shires marathon

BENNINGTON -- The third annual 'Shires of Vermont Marathon,' a classic point-to-point 26.2 mile road race connecting the southern Vermont towns of Bennington and Manchester, is accepting registrations for the race on May 19. Race applications and online registration are available at The race is organized by the Batten Kill Valley Runners to benefit community mental health and developmental services.

Runners from about 30 different states and foreign countries love the course, which will be the same this year as before. It starts at The Bennington Center for the Arts and finishes at Hildene Meadows in Manchester.

Anyone interested in helping to put on a very popular, large event is welcome to join the organizing committee, which meets monthly.
