Players to hold auditions

DORSET - The Do rset Players have announced auditions for their upcoming spring musical presentation of Stephen Sondheim's "Any one Can Whistle," directed by Jeff Line beck. The auditions will be held at the Dorset Playhouse on Tuesday, Jan. 29 and Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. Performance dates are set for May 16-19 and 23-26.

Major principle roles are available for two women and four men. There are also opportunities available for smaller roles and a large chorus from which cameo roles will be chosen. Those wishing to audition for one of the principle roles, have a musical selection prepared that can demonstrate your ability, paying particular attention to enthusiasm and bold characterization. Those interested may bring their own pre-recorded accompaniment or sheet music with you, or be prepared to sing a cappella. Dialogue readings and movement exercises will also be evaluated. A small number of chorus roles will be open to young people ages 10 and up.

"Anyone Can Whistle" is a musical about political corruption and the vague definition of sanity. The hated mayor Cora Hoover Hooper, and her cadre of henchmen, have led her small town into bankruptcy. To save the town, she creates a fake "miracle" to attract tourist dollars. Unfortunately, during the tourist rush, the inmates from the local asylum, called the Cookie Jar, escape. A Dr. Hapgood surfaces who says he can identify the "cook ies" and separate them from the "sane" members of society. Trouble ensues when the cookies' nurse, Fay Apple, refuses to identify her patients and ends up falling in love with Hapgood.
