Odyssey of the Mind team takes first place
MANCHESTER >> On Saturday, March 19, six Maple Street School 5th- and 6th-graders competed in the statewide Odyssey of the Mind competition in Burlington and took first place for their division. The group competed against teams of older students in the 6th-8th grade category from throughout the state.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international, educational program for students from Kindergarten through college. Team members apply creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. The group is fundamentally committed to the concept of teamwork and collaboration. Each team must work through the entire process, from brainstorming through final editing as a group.
"This competition challenges students to find their creative voice when looking at a problem," said Maple Street Head of School Fran Bisselle. "These skills are fundamental to raising curious, imaginative scholars, and Odyssey of the Mind makes this kind of experiential learning fun."
The Maple Street School team chose the "Fins, Furs, Feathers and Friends" problem, which asked them to write and perform a play solving their problem. The team was comprised of 5th-graders Solitaire Niles, Shaftsbury; Paige Samuelson, Winhall; George Zilkha, Manchester; as well as 6th-graders Annabelle Gray, Londonderry; Perrin Marion, Manchester; and MacLean Thuermer, Manchester. The team was led by Maple Street School parent Kathy Zilkha.
The team qualified to compete at Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Ames, Iowa May 25-28.
