NJ man dies in sledding accident

STRATTON -- A man died this past weekend after sledding down a trail designed for skiing and snowboarding.

On Saturday at approximately 2:40 a.m., the Winhall Police responded to Stratton Mountain for a report of an injured person on the Lower Tamarac trail. Lawrence Walck, 45, of Pittstown, N.J., was found unresponsive on the trail where he had been sledding after the resort had closed.

"There was a 911 call from a friend of the victim," said Winhall Police Department Sgt. Derrick Tienken.

The Winhall Police along with Winhall Rescue and Londonderry Rescue responded to the scene. Despite resuscitation efforts, Walck succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

He and two others had been on the trail. The department will be continuing its own investigation as it awaits the results of an autopsy conducted by the Medical Examiner's Office.

"It's not suspicious in nature," said Tienken.

He told the Reformer that police were not sure if drugs or alcohol played a role in the death and that there would be another press release once more details were available. v Officials from Stratton Mountain could not be reached by press time.
