Mettowee School hosts Geography Bee
That was the question Mettawee Community School fifth grader Ben Park answered with "Indonesia" to win the 2014 National Geographic School Level Geography Bee held at the Mettowee Community School on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
"The National Geographic Geography Bee is a competition open to students in grades four through eight to encourage learning about the world's peoples and places. At Mettawee, nearly sixty of the fourth, fifth, and sixth graders competed in the classroom rounds. The top finishers from those rounds went on to compete in Mettawee's Final Round." said fourth grade teacher Mark Rampone, who has been the organizer of the school level Geo Bee at Mettawee for 16 years. "This was an exciting competition held on the multipurpose room stage before the whole school and numerous parents."
Kelly Ahlfeld - the school librarian - pronounced the questions and moderated the event. Rampone pointed out that students were very focused and when it was all over fifth graders finished in the top three with Audra Marcus in third, Jade Marantz second and Park as the school winner for the second year in a row.
Principal Brooke DeBonis congratulated the contestants and awarded certificates of participation immediately following the competition. Park's next step was taking a placement test to gain admittance to the Vermont State Level Geo Bee. Park will be competing at the state level Geo Bee which is scheduled for Friday, April 4, at Middlebury College.
"The whole school wishes him good luck," said Rampone.
The Final Round participants are: Park, fifth grade; Piper Russell, fifth grade; Grace McElheny, fifth grade; Kylie Breton, fifth grade; Sean Bottomms, sixth grade; Marcus, fifth grade; Bryan Ferguson, sixth grade and Rowan Russell, fourth grade.
