Letter to the editor: Team thankful for place to practice

Team thankful for place to practice

The Shaftsbury young ladies softball team, sponsored by Inkspot Press of Bennington, would like to say thank you to Tom Martin, principal of the North Bennington Independent Village School, for letting us practice in the school gym during the dog days of winter.

One night a week we met at the Village School to work on throwing, pitching, catching, fielding, and batting, and it paid off during opening day last Saturday at the middle school when we won our first game in two years. We scored 26 runs against Baker and Stove Depot, both of which played great games too.

Though difficult for obvious reasons, girls softball in Vermont should be practiced year-round and thanks to Mr. Martin's generosity, Shaftsbury was able to do so in the winter while taking a few more steps toward its goal of being the best team we can be.

Thank you, Mr. Martin, from Gretta ("Oregano"), Sophie ("Basil"), Lexus ("Lil Papi"), Sierra ("Spike"), Aidan ("Robin"), Meghan ("Shermanator"), Megan ("Wildrider"), and Jasmine ("Superwoman"), Coach Joe Forrest, Coach Danielle Westervelt, Coach Emily McGann.

— Joey Kulkin, head coach, Shaftsbury Inkspot Press Bennington
