Letter to the Editor: Support appreciated

To the Editor:

On behalf of the children of Manchester and surrounding areas, I would like to thank the Board of Directors and homeowners of Equinox on the Battenkill for their generous donation to the Youth Services Department of the Manchester Community Library. Their support has enabled us to purchase a robust collection of the most popular children's series books, some of which were enthusiastically suggested by second graders at Maple Street School.

As research shows, when children choose reading materials themselves and read for pleasure, they receive the most gains in reading achievement and skip the "summer slide." Readers of all ages love series books because once someone finds an author or a continuing character they enjoy, they can go back to that author or character again and again. EOB's gift came at just the right time for summer reading.

I wholeheartedly appreciate the community-minded spirit which motivated the folks at EOB to reach out to the Library in such an open-hearted and generous way. They have given a gift that will go on giving every time a child opens one of their books.
