Letter to the editor: Coverage appreciated, article didn't list awards

Coverage appreciated, article didn't list awards

We appreciated the Banner's coverage of T.J. Donovan's remarkable speech at the Sunrise Annual Meeting at the Bennington Museum last Tuesday, Oct. 27. (Attorney General candidate T.J. Donovan speaks at Sunrise meeting, Oct. 28) But we had hoped you would mention one of the principal purposes of our annual meeting, which is to acknowledge and celebrate several community partners who, in the last year, planned, gave, and sacrificed to improve the lives of families living in poverty and crisis in our community. In addition, this was our Executive Director's last annual meeting: after 26 years at the helm of this Parent Child Center, she will be stepping down in March. Mr. Carson did not mention this in his article.

I would be most grateful if you would print this letter, or run a supplement to Derek Carson's article which featured T.J. Donovan, and add this information and these names: Mary Welford, Esq. received an award for Distinguished Individual Community Service, for providing free legal representation to a young mother in a complex case involving parental rights, The Vermont Country Store, for a program-changing donation of laptop computers, Karson Kiesinger and the Bennington Free Library, for promoting Mental Health Awareness Month, Susan Fox and the Bennington Meals Program, for extraordinary mentoring of teen parents learning work skills, Debby Dutcher and Kathy O'Reilly and the Vermont Department of Health, for their work on the newly-reconstituted Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Task Force of Bennington County. Last but not least, our staff member, Sean-Marie Oller, was awarded the Bonnie Prentiss Award by her colleagues for exemplifying the qualities possessed by a beloved former Sunrise teacher who died from cancer several years ago.
