How will Act 46 affect us?

To the Editor:

The Mountain Towns RED is seeking volunteer for the Act 46 Study Committee.

Who will be on the committee? School board and community representatives from Danby, Dorset, Manchester, Mt. Tabor, Sunderland and the Mountain Towns RED (Landgrove, Londonderry, Peru and Weston).

What is their charge? To draft a plan following Act 46 guidelines to consolidate all these towns into one unified school district with one school board, administration, budget, and tax rate.

When will this happen? The committee will convene soon in April and meet frequently throughout the summer to complete and submit the plan to the VT Agency of Education by October 2016.

Responsibilities include attending meetings to learn about Act 46 requirements and the current governance structures and concerns of all the participating towns; working with committee members and a consultant to lay the groundwork for a new consolidated district to begin full operation in 2018; reaching out to inform local community members throughout the process, especially before the ballot vote in December 2016

Get Involved! If you'd like to have a part in this far-reaching change for our kids, our school and our taxpayers, please send a brief letter to the Mountain Towns RED Board in care of Ann Alford at the Flood Brook School, 91 VT Route 11, Londonderry, VT 05148, or email it to,

Jon Mowry

RED Board Chair

Debra Lyneis, RED Board Member
