Hiker found safe after going missing in Woodford

WOODFORD >> A man who went missing while hiking the Long Trail on Wednesday was found in "good shape" Thursday morning, authorities say.

Emergency responders conducted an all-night search for Timothy Abare, 27, who became separated from his hiking partner mid-afternoon Wednesday, according to a press release by Vermont State Trooper Benjamin Barton, Shaftsbury barracks.

Abare's partner called Vermont State Police when they couldn't locate him.

Members of the Woodford Fire Department, Vermont State Police and VSP Search and Rescue Team conducted an all-night search for Abare, but did not find him.

Early Thursday morning, Abare called 911 and was connected to the search team manager, who obtained his cell phone coordinates. The search team manager was able to guide a Vermont Fish and Game Warden and a U.S. Forest Service Warden to Abare's location in the Woodford Wilderness Area.

Abare was able to safely walk out of the woods, but it took several hours due to the inhospitable and rough terrain. Police said Abare "was in relatively good shape" and was evaluated by medical personnel.
