Guests from down under

DORSET - On Thursday, Dec. 12, Long Trail School welcomed 34 basketball players and their coaches from Waverley College outside Sydney, Australia. During the group's visit, they scrimmaged with Long Trail basketball teams and exchanged information about schools, communities and cultures.

The boys left Long Trail for a ski and snowboard trip to Killington before flying home.

The Australians put out an email last summer to schools in the area requesting games for their varsity, JV, and freshmen teams this winter.

Knowing that US team schedules are set so far in advance and that few teams are willing to play an open game with the possibility of injury, LTS Athletic Director Scott Magrath also knew that LTS students would appreciate both the athletic and cultural aspects of a meeting.

It seemed like a great opportunity for Long Trail. Given the response from LTS families for overnight hosting, Long Trail was able to accommodate all three Australian teams.

Says Magrath, "This is certainly a highlight of my work as an athletic director. Long Trail has always had a strong international presence and a global perspective, so being able to use a game of basketball to bridge two cultures seemed perfect. More than just seeing a different style of basketball, both schools' teams got to meet and hang out with kids from halfway around the world. It was a great experience."
