Fun at the dog park

To the Editor:

The Manchester Dog Park was the scene of lots of fun, play, demos and good food on Sept. 15 when we hosted the third annual Yappy Birthday party for dogs and their people. We raised much-needed funds to help maintain the park, and we are grateful to the roughly 70 owners and 45 dogs who helped us do that. In particular, we want to thank our generous sponsors for underwriting the party - Casablanca Motel, Green Mountain Veterinary Hospital, Wagatha's Organic Dog Biscuits, Pets Etc., Therapy Dogs of Vermont, RBC Wealth Management, Dog Lovers Training, Manchester Maintenance and Shaw's Supermarkets. We were delighted that the crew from GNAT public television was there to record the festivities.

We welcomed breed rescue groups such as Fast Friends Greyhound Rescue, Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue and Green Mountain Pug Rescue, who showcased their lucky adoptable canines and shared information about their organizations. As usual, Kathy Stone of Meals on Wheels provided a delicious luncheon for all four-legged attendees, while Wagatha's treated the dogs.

We are also most indebted to the team of volunteers who so ably managed registration, the raffle and T-shirt sales, and manned the gate to the park so that, in the excitement of the day, there were no escapees. The Rec Park maintenance crew and management also deserve praise for getting the dog park in such apple-pie order for the party.

A final thank-you goes to everyone who attended, whether first-time visitors or habitu├ęs. We appreciate your support more than we can say.

Next year's party will be on Sept. 14, so plan now to be there. Meanwhile, you can see all the excitement on our Facebook page.
