Film festival continues with "Shine"
Helfgott was an international musical prodigy known for his preference to performing compositions by Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Liszt, Schumann and Rimsky-Korsakov.
Under the strict rule of his father as a youth, he later suffered a mental breakdown and gradually pieced himself together.
Focused on his formative years and struggle with mental illness, the film takes viewers from the depths of despair and to the heights of achievement and joy.
The success of this film in 1996 launched Helfgott's international musical tour which was met with mixed reviews.
Nominated for seven Oscars, this poignant film stars John Gielgud, Lynn Redgrave, and Geoffrey Rush who received an Academy Award as Best Actor for his portrayal of Helfgott.
