Columbus weekend sidewalk sale planned

MANCHESTER- Starting Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 4 - 8, the town of Manchester will be sporting another sidewalk sale to help businesses make up revenue lost from the busy construction season.

Berta Magginniss, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, believes this is something that businesses in the area need especially during the peak of fall foliage season. Local merchants in the area, including Manchester Designer Outlets and those residing on Main Street, came to Magginniss in hopes of getting this approved by the selectboard on Sept. 18.

Columbus Day Weekend was an obvious choice for a sidewalk sale because it is an extremely busy time of year for the area, she said.

"We know it is a good, busy holiday that draws people to our region," said Magginniss, "it will be one more thing for visitors to take advantage of and should benefit those who participate greatly."

Although the sidewalk sale will occur during one of the busiest times of the year it is expected that this is a one time deal. This is not something that will be done annually for a couple reasons. Magginniss does not want this sidewalk sale to diminish the other sidewalk sale that takes place during August. It is also important that local merchants have to ability to make up what they have lost during a heavy construction season, she said.

It will also be a way to introduce visitors to the new look roundabout on Main Street. The sidewalks will be in and the area will start to look less like a construction site, she said.

This also comes at a time when the Chamber of Commerce will be switching locations, from its present location on Center Hill to larger quarters on Bonnet Street. The sidewalk sale may help draw locals to the new location, she said.
