Choral Society in search of singers

BENNINGTON - The Bennington County Choral Society (BCCS), directed by Edwin Lawrence, has opened a call for singers for its spring performances of Faur's "Requiem." Rehearsals begin Monday, Jan. 7, at the Second Congregational Church in Bennington. New singers are welcome and encouraged to join. This spring's concert, with performances on Saturday, March 23, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 24, at 3 p.m., celebrates one of the best-loved choral works of the 19th century, French composer Gabriel Faur's "Requiem," Op. 48.

The BCCS spring concert program also includes Romantic music by composers such as Mendelssohn, Brahms and others. The Bennington County Choral Society is a mixed adult chorus of voices is drawn from southern Vermont and nearby New York and Massachusetts communities. It aims to foster an environment in which chorus members coalesce as a group and develop as an ensemble, with the goal of growing musically through weekly rehearsals and performances that are a source of pride and pleasure. The chorus, which performs three concerts each year, is open to ages 15 and older and all singing/reading abilities.

Any interested singer can join the first rehearsal on Monday, Jan. 7, and should arrive at 6:45 p.m., to allow time to register and sign out music, and to greet friends old and new. Regular weekly rehearsals are on Monday nights from 7 to 9 p.m.; a modest membership fee of $25 ($10 for students with ID) is requested. The Second Congregational Church, located at 115 Hillside Street in Bennington, is a fully handicapped-accessible space. For more information about the BCCS and its concerts, visit
