BVSU to begin sup't search
The BVSU board voted at the end of October not to renew current Superintendent Karen Gallese's contract past the end of this year and has yet to cite a reason for their decision.
Harvey made a motion during last Thursday's meeting, asking the board to invite a representative from the Vermont School Boards Association to attend the BVSU's next meeting on Dec. 4 -- a motion which the board voted to approve.
During the meeting, the representative would discuss hiring options and procedures with board members, and field questions regarding the hiring process, according to Harvey.
"I think we need to start talking (about hiring a superintendent). I don't see any point in sitting and waiting," Harvey said at the meeting.
Following the meeting, Harvey said she isn't sure what exactly the hiring process will look like at this time, but that if she were to make the decision, that the VSBA would handle the hiring process.
"I personally think that since they're a professional service and they know what they're doing that I would leave the majority of (the responsibility) in their hands, let them weed out candidates and then have the community get involved," Harvey said.
According to Harvey, if the VSBA were to handle the superintendent search, it would cost the board $6,500, not including advertising expenses.
Harvey said after the meeting that she hopes to hire a new superintendent to replace Gallese by the end of the school year.
"It really depends on how the search goes," Harvey said.
At this time, it has yet to be decided if the incoming superintendent will be hired on a part-time or full-time status.
According to Harvey, the issue will be discussed during the next board meeting.
In addition to hiring a new superintendent, the BVSU is also looking to fill three open positions within the business office, including a business manger and two accounting/secretarial positions, which, according to Harvey, have yet to be officially identified.
"We're looking to mix up the duties but we're not quite sure what they will be just yet," Harvey said, adding that she hopes to have a new business manager in place by April 1.
The VSBA representative will meet with the BVSU board next Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m., prior to the board's regularly scheduled, 6 p.m. meeting.
Harvey said the public is encouraged to attend and ask questions.
