Bulldogs edge Brattleboro, Carthy scores winner
MANCHESTER >> The Burr and Burton field hockey team edged Brattleboro, 1-0, on Monday afternoon.
With 11 minutes left in the first half, Charleigh Carthy scored off an assist from Hannah Hedberg and Rachel Tegen.
BBA had 22 penalty corners compared to two for the Colonels. Molly Dingley had one save, while Olivia Weeks had 11 for Brattleboro.
BBA improves to 4-5-3 and are home against Fair Haven next on Oct. 19.
Biggers the NECC Rookie of the Week
BENNINGTON >> The New England Collegiate Conference announced on Monday its weekly award winners for the period ending October 9 with Southern Vermont College freshman Danielle Biggers being selected as the league's women's soccer Rookie of the Week.
Biggers played a huge part in SVC taking its only game last week, scoring two goals at Wheelock College including what proved to be the game winner on Saturday. She tallied four points, now having five scores on the year while notching her first collegiate game-winning goal in the 10th minute.
Monday's accolade is the first in Biggers' career and the second Rookie of the Week honor for SVC as fellow freshman Taylor Mallett received the award on September 12.
Biggers and the Mountaineers turn to a pair of league contests this week, the first of those being a Wednesday home match against Mitchell College (3 p.m.).
Bill Koch info meeting
BENNINGTON >> The Prospect Mountain Bill Koch Youth Ski League will hold an informational meeting for new and returning families on October 23 at 2 p.m. at Prospect Mountain Nordic Center on Route 9 in Woodford. A ski and clothing swap/sale will follow the meeting at approximately 2:30 p.m.
The meeting will be an opportunity for prospective families to learn about the Bill Koch Youth Ski League, a cross country ski program for youth ages 4-13. The program introduces young people to the life-long sport of cross country skiing with all of its recreational, social, fitness and competitive opportunities. The program attracts children and families from nearby communities in Vermont, Massachusetts and New York.
The Prospect Mountain Bill Koch League practices every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at Prospect Mountain in Woodford. Practices will begin on Tuesday, December 13th and will run through early March.

Football Youth Night is set for Oct. 14
BENNINGTON >> MAYAA Football Youth Night will be held at Mount Anthony's Spinelli Field on Oct. 14 when the Patriot football team plays host to Champlain Valley Union at 7 p.m. All boys playing in the area youth football league will be admitted free of charge by wearing their game jerseys.
Parents are asked to please accompany their children at the game or arrange supervision by a coach or another parent.
A drawing for a free football ball signed by the varsity team will be held at halftime for all MAYAA football players in attendance.
Running of the Turkeys returns
ARLINGTON >> Runners, walkers, and kids of all ages are invited to participate in the 21st Annual Running of the Turkeys held on Thanksgiving morning in Arlington, Vermont. The event includes a 5K (3.1 miles) run and walk as well as a Kids' Fun Run. The race will be hosted by the Batten Kill Valley Runners Club and is a traditional Bennington County, Thanksgiving Day family event.
The run and walk take off promptly at 9 a.m. on November 24 at the Fisher Elementary School. The Kids' Fun Run is scheduled to start at 9:45 a.m.
Entry forms are available at the Batten Kill Valley Runners website, www.bkvr.net and online registration is at http:// RunningoftheTurkeys.itsyourrace. com. Runners are encouraged to register in advance. Discounts are available for all entries, including families, postmarked by November 15. Standout commemorative, long-sleeved, logoed shirts are available for an additional cost and can be ordered on www.bkvr.net by November 5.
