Bidder70 returns

MANCHESTER - Transition Town Manchester's One Earth Film Series presents the film "Bidder 70," on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Mark Skinner Library.

"Bidder 70" follows Tim DeChristopher, a University of Utah student, who on Dec. 19, 2008, in a dazzling act of civil disobedience, derailed the outgoing Bush administration's illegal and ill advised, Bureau of Land Management oil and gas auction.

As bidder No. 70, DeChristopher bid $1.8 million dollars and won 22,000 pristine acres surrounding Utah's National Parks with no intention to pay or drill.

In February 2009, the new Obama administration agreed the land should be safeguarded and invalidated the entire auction.

Nevertheless, DeChristopher was indicted on two federal felonies with penalties of up to 10 years in prison.

DeChristopher's life has been forever altered by the actions he took on Dec. 19, 2008.

"Bidder 70" is a personal portrait that illuminates how the choices people make determine the future and the world in which we live.

The film features Robert Redford, Terry Tempest Williams and Bill McKibben, among others. There will be a short discussion afterwards. The suggested donation is $5.
