Bennington man arrested in attempted Stratton burglary

WINHALL - An 18 year-old Bennington man was arrested for unlawful trespass and for violating conditions of release following an apparent burglary attempt which occurred early Monday, April 9.

According to a report from the Winhall Police department, a burglar alarm was set off at a residence on 15 Slippery Fox Road shortly after midnight, April 8. While on his way to responding to the alarm, Sgt. Crowe of the Winhall Police observed a vehicle leaving the area near Slippery Fox Road. After stopping the vehicle on the Stratton Mountain Access Road, the driver, Ian W. Kilpatrick of Bennington, admitted attempting to go into the home, police said, and was charged with unlawful trespass and contempt of court for violating existing conditions of release.

According to the police, Kilpatrick had been released by the Vermont District Court on conditions on Feb. 27, 2012, from a case involving several burglaries in the Bennington area.

Kilpatrick had worked at the residence on Slippery Rock Road earlier in the week and thought no one would be home because they were on vacation, according to the police report.

Kilpatrick was lodged at the Marble Valley Correctional Center in Rutland for lack of $5,000 bail and additional conditions of release were set, according to the police. The Manchester Police Department and the Vermont State Police also assisted at the scene, according to the Winhall Police.
