Bennington man accused of repeatedly raping a child

BENNINGTON — A Bennington man is accused of repeatedly raping a girl between the time she was about nine until her early teens.

Todd M. Brandi, 41, pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Vermont Superior Court Criminal Division Bennington Unit to aggravated sexual assault on a victim under 13, repeated aggravated sexual assault, and repeated aggravated sexual assault of a child. He was ordered held without bail until a weight of the evidence hearing where the court will consider what, if any, conditions or bail he can be release upon to ensure court appearances and public safety.

At his arraignment hearing, prosecutors indicated he had been jailed in New York for the past several months.

According to an affidavit by Bennington Police Detective Anthony Silvestro, on Jan. 7, 2015, he learned that a woman had spoken to police in New York who said she had been sexually assaulted by Brandi in New York and Vermont.

Silvestro met with the woman who described the incidents of being sexually assaulted by Brandi. One was when she was about nine years old, another when she was between 10 and 11, and a third time when she was either 12 or 13. She said it happened about 20 times in total, but she could not distinctly recall each event.

She said she did not disclose this sooner because Brandi told her bad things would happen if she did. She spoke now because she feared for the safety of another child.

Silvestro said he spoke to Brandi via phone and was referred to his attorney. The attorney said Brandi would not be giving a statement.
