BBA trustees approve tuition rate

MANCHESTER >> Trustees of Burr and Burton Academy voted earlier this week to set the tuition rate for area towns which make up the school's "sending districts." Those towns include Danby, Dorset, Dover, Landgrove, Londonderry, Manchester, Mt. Tabor, Peru, Searsburg, Stratton, Sunderland, Weston and Winhall.

According to a statement from Seth Bongartz, the chairman of the board of trustees, and Mark Tashjian, the school's headmaster, the trustees approved a tuition rate of $16,250 for the 2016-17 school year, representing a 1.88 percent increase.

The current tuition rate for sending districts is $15,950.

The tuition rate for other districts which are not taxpayer supported is currently $16,950. That rate will increase to $17,250, or roughly a comparable 1.8 percent increase.

"With teacher salaries increasing 2.8 percent and benefits increasing 8 percent next year, a 1.88 percent tuition increase is less than half of what we would need to stay in financial balance at current enrollment levels," the announcement released Wednesday of the increase stated. "However, in setting this tuition, the board seeks to support our sending schools, which are facing similar

financial pressures under Act 46. BBA cherishes its relationship with our sending communities. We benefit from your support, and we want that support to be mutually beneficial. In good times and in tough times, we are all in this together."

This tuition rate will now be incorporated into the school budgets being prepared by area school districts as part of their secondary school program costs.
