BBA snowboarding team off to good start

LUDLOW - The Burr and Burton Academy boys and girls snowboarding teams have gotten off to a good start so far this season.

In the team's most recent slopestyle competition at Okemo Mountain both the boys and girls team's placed second overall.

The boys used a first place finish by Elliot Buckley and solid performances from Will Helmetag and Chila Carter - who placed 11th and 12th respectively overall - to combine for a total team score of 41, just five points behind first place finisher Woodstock. Britt Blanchard finished 25 overall for BBA while Nick Scott and Trevor Biggs placed 31st and 40th, respectively.

On the girls side, Caroline Kepler finished third overall helping the team score 13 points - five points Black River who won the competition with a team score of 8. Katy Jones was eighth overall while Mikaela McMahon and Taite Selden-Johnson rounded out the scoring placing 12th and 13th, respectively.


Two days before their slopestyle competition at Okemo, the Bulldogs opened their season with a Giant Slalom competition at Bromley Mountain. The boys won the competition behind strong performances from Helmetag and Scott, posting a team score of 31 - seven points ahead of second place finisher Woodstock. Helmetag finished first overall with a combined time of 1:23.03 over two runs and Scott third with a combined time of 1:30.58. Buckley also placed in the top 10, finishing seventh overall with a combined time of 1:38.85. Britton Blanchard and Carter Chila finished 23rd and 24th with combined times of 2:13.4 and 2:14.6, respectively.

The girls team also had a very good showing in their first competition finishing with a team score of 19 points - just one point behind first place Woodstock.

The Bulldogs were powered by strong performances by Kepler - who took second place overall with a combined time of 1:33.85 - and Cali Wadsworth who finished sixth overall with a combined time of 1:50.63. BBA's Amelia Nick and McMahon finished 17th and 18th, respectively, with combined times of 2:13.04 and 2:17.0.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to compete in halfpipe at Okemo Mountain on Jan. 22 beginning at 1 p.m.
