Battenkill Chorale to perform

SARATOGA, N.Y. - The Battenkill Chorale, under the leadership of Artistic Director Janet McGhee, opens it's 19th season with "Northern Lights," a program of spiritual music from Norway, Latvia, and Russia, on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m, at Zankel Music Center's Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall, Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

There is also a free open dress rehearsal Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m, at Zankel Music Center; no tickets are required.

Featured works include Ola Gjeilo's haunting Northern Lights and his majestic "Sunrise Mass" for chorus and string orchestra, as well as Eriks Esenvalds' "Northern Lights" for chorus, tuned water glasses and hand bells. Russian liturgical music by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Chesnokov complete the program.

Soloists in the Russian liturgical music are soprano Carol Poppe and baritone Nicholas Lasoff. The tenor soloist in the Esenvalds is Paul Lambert.
