Chef and author Louise Miller will read from her latest work, "The City Baker's Guide to Country Living" at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14

Chosen as one of the best new food books to read this year by Bon Appetit, this full-hearted novel is about a big-city baker who discovers the true meaning of home, and that sometimes the best things are found when you didn't even know you were looking.

When Olivia Rawlings, pastry chef extraordinaire for an exclusive Boston dinner club, sets not just her flambéed dessert but the entire building alight, she escapes to the most comforting place she can think of, the idyllic town of Guthrie, Vt., home of Bag Balm, the country's longest-running contra dance, and her best friend Hannah. But the getaway turns into something more lasting when Margaret Hurley, the cantankerous, sweater-set-wearing owner of the Sugar Maple Inn, offers Livvy a job.

Louise Miller is a pastry chef who lives and works in Boston. She received a scholarship to attend GrubStreet's Novel Incubator program, a yearlong workshop for novelists. She is an art school dropout, an amateur flower gardener, an old-time banjo player, an obsessive moviegoer, and a champion of old dogs.

Then, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, Meg Little Reilly will present her novel "We Are Unprepared."

Reilly places a young couple in harm's way both literally and emotionally as they face a cataclysmic storm that threatens to decimate their Vermont town and the Eastern Seaboard

in her penetrating debut novel.

Ash and Pia move from hipster Brooklyn to rustic Vermont in search of a more authentic life. But just months after settling in, the forecast of a superstorm disrupts their dream. Fear of an impending disaster splits their tight-knit community and exposes the cracks in their marriage.

"We Are Unprepared" is an emotional journey, a terrifying glimpse into the human costs of our changing earth and, ultimately, a cautionary tale of survival and the human.

Meg Little Reilly is a former Treasury Spokesperson under President Obama, Deputy Communications Director for the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), communicator for the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and producer for Vermont Public Radio. A native of Vermont, she is an UVM graduate with deep ties around the state. She currently lives in Boston with her husband Daniel and two daughters.
