Arlington accepts pre-K students from Sunderland
Karen Gallese, superintendent of Battenkill Valley Supervisory Union, said requests have been made from some parents in Sunderland to tuition their children to Fisher Elementary for pre-K because Sunderland Elementary does not offer it.
In recent years the only district Arlington has allowed to tuition children into its pre-K program has been Sandgate. The board expanded that offer Wednesday to districts within the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union, which includes Sunderland. The agreement only allows students from outside Arlington to attend if there is space available.
Fisher operates two pre-K classes that both have a maximum enrollment of 15 students. This school year the classes have a combined 27 students, so if the agreement had been in place Arlington could have accepted three tuition students from outside the supervisory union, Principal Deanne Lacoste told the board.
"This would allow students who are within the BRSU to attend, and BRSU to pay that tuition to us only if there are slots open," Lacoste said. "This year I have three open slots; they could potentially fill those three open slots."
The board set a tuition rate for students in BRSU at $2,450.
Gallese said districts in BRSU would still have to agree to pay tuition in order for children to attend pre-K in Arlington.
The only other action taken by the board Wednesday was position appointments. Retaining chairmanship was Todd Wilkins, who has held the position the past three years. Continuing as vice chairwoman was Maureen Harvey and continuing as secretary was Diane Jennings.
The school board also appointed Harvey, Jennings, and Dawn Hoyt to the Battenkill Valley Supervisory Union board. Hoyt replaces Wilkins on the BVSU board after Wilkins sked Hoyt if she was interested and then nominated her.
Sandgate School District, the only other district in BVSU, will appoint one member to the supervisory union board at its re-organization meeting. Because Sandgate does not operate a school it is allowed just one representative.
