MANCHESTER >> Monday night women's ice hockey win went to the Vermont Country Store over Merchants Bank with a score of 4-3.

Merchants Bank's defensive player Christine Miles put the first goal on the board. Miles picked up the puck on a breakaway and victoriously shot into goalie Tiffany Clark's net.

Minutes later, VCS flooded goalie Chrystal Cleary's net with their sticks and determination. Margi Putney was able to see through the chaos and flick the puck into the upper corner, tying up the score 1-1.

The back and fourth play continued throughout the night. Merchants' Fran Bisselle successfully shot the puck in with the assist from Topsy King. Merchants' lead did not last long. VCS's Pam Engel made her move and picked up a loose puck and delivered it to the back of the net. The score returned to a tie of 2-2. VCS took the next lead when Jenny Petronis shot from an impossible angle and put in her first goal of the night.

At the start of the third period, Merchants' King found herself surrounded by the mother- daughter defensive line of Barbara Coleman and Becky Coleman-Smith. With no place to go, King passed to Bisselle who gracefully slid the puck past the goalie.

The tie held until the last minute of play when VCS's Karen Geriak came around the back door of the net and snuck in the winning goal, final score 4-3. Women's league play continues on Monday nights at Riley Rink at Hunter Park in Manchester and is open to all women.
